Lindsey Stewart found Central Wyoming College in 2022 through a flyer at the local coffee shop. This Spring she will be the first graduate of the Regenerative Farming program. Her successes led the college to recognize her this month as Student of the Year.

“Lindsey is a perfect example of Central Wyoming College’s mission in action,” said CWC Vice President for Student Affairs Coralina Daly. “She is applying what she has learned in her program directly for community benefit.”

Lindsey is the manager for Fremont Local Market, a full-time indoor farmer’s market. The position has helped her connect with the community and see what is possible.

“It is inspiring to see what our producers put into their products,” said Lindsey, who loves small-scale farming because of the care that goes into growing the veggies, fruit, and flowers sold at the market. “It’s really beautiful,” she said.

According to CWC Instructor of Local Food and Agriculture Ethan Page, Lindsey started out as “a quiet, unassuming part of our crop production practicum class, but quickly settled in to become a consistent, enthusiastic, hard working presence on the farm.”

Lindsey said her favorite part of the program has been the hands-on crop practicum classes where students work from seed to harvest. “I really got to appreciate the work producers put in,” she said. This perspective has helped her explain to consumers the value of what they purchase.

“Lindsey is a perfect example of what our program is trying to accomplish: developing food system leaders,” said Page, who also touted her consistent academic excellence. Although Lindsey did not grow up on a farm or ranch, she is looking forward to being a first-generation farmer. After graduation this Spring, Lindsey plans to continue at CWC to pursue her Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a focus on Agricultural Leadership.
